Binary Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: Evidence for Excess Clustering on Small Scales

چکیده
We present a sample of 218 new quasar pairs with proper transverse separations Rprop < 1 h −1 Mpc over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 3.0, discovered from an extensive follow up campaign to find companions around the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF Quasar Redshift Survey quasars. This sample includes 26 new binary quasars with separations Rprop < 50 h −1 kpc (θ < 10), more than doubling the number of such systems known. We define a statistical sample of binaries selected with homogeneous criteria and compute its selection function, taking into account sources of incompleteness. The first measurement of the quasar correlation function on scales 10 h kpc < Rprop < 400 h −1 kpc is presented. For Rprop . 40 h −1 kpc, we detect an order of magnitude excess clustering over the expectation from the large scale (Rprop & 3 h −1 Mpc) quasar correlation function, extrapolated down as a power law to the separations probed by our binaries. The excess grows to ∼ 30 at Rprop ∼ 10 h −1 kpc, and provides compelling evidence that the quasar autocorrelation function gets progressively steeper on sub-Mpc scales. This small scale excess can likely be attributed to dissipative interaction events which trigger quasar activity in rich environments. Recent small scale measurements of galaxy clustering and quasar-galaxy clustering are reviewed and discussed in relation to our measurement of small scale quasar clustering. The real-space clustering of luminous red galaxies around z < 0.6 quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We measure the clustering of a sample of photometrically selected luminous red galaxies around a low redshift (0.2 < z < 0.6) sample of quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. We make use of a new statistical estimator to obtain precise measurements of the LRG auto-correlations and constrain halo occupation distributions for them. These are used to generate mock catal...
متن کاملBinary Quasars at High Redshift Ii: Sub-mpc Clustering at Z ∼ 3 − 4
We present measurements of the small-scale (0.1 . r . 1 h−1Mpc) quasar two-point correlation function at z > 2.9, for a flux-limited (i < 21) sample of 15 binary quasars compiled by Hennawi et al. (2009). The amplitude of the small-scale clustering increases from z ∼ 3 to z ∼ 4. The small-scale clustering amplitude is comparable to or lower than power-law extrapolations (with slope γ = 2) from ...
متن کاملPredictions of Quasar Clustering: Redshift, Luminosity and Selection Dependence
We show that current clustering observations of quasars and luminous AGN can be explained by a merger model augmented by feedback from outflows. Using numerical simulations large enough to study clustering out to 25 comoving h−1 Mpc, we calculate correlation functions, biases, and correlation lengths as a function of AGN redshift and optical and X-ray luminosity. At optical wavelengths, our res...
متن کاملExtreme BAL Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has discovered a population of broad absorption line quasars with various extreme properties. Many show absorption from metastable states of Fe ii with varying excitations; several objects are almost completely absorbed bluewards of Mg ii; at 1
متن کاملThe Small-scale Environment of Quasars
Where do quasars reside? Are quasars located in environments similar to those of typical L galaxies, and, if not, how do they differ? An answer to this question will help shed light on the triggering process of quasar activity. We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to study the environment of quasars and compare it directly with the environment of galaxies. We find that quasars (Mi ≤ −22, z ≤ 0.4...
